Low email open rate got you down? Here’s what to do

So you launched a newsletter for your small biz, you've been writing emails *when inspiration hits* (more on that later) and 🦗🦗🦗.

No one's opening them. If you're a small business with an email newsletter but low open rates, please don't get discouraged. Here’s what to do instead…

First off, if people are deleting your emails BUT not unsubscribing, that's actually fantastic news 🥳 They see your business name every time they hit 'delete,' keeping you top of mind next time they need your product or service.

Don't take it personally. People get inundated with emails every day and have to prioritize their inbox. They might not have a need for your product/service now but want to keep you in mind for the future.

So here's what to do if you're feeling frustrated by your newsletter's performance...

01. Keep a consistent email cadence!

Weekly is ideal, biweekly is great too. Whatever is manageable for you and ideal for your audience. It doesn't need to be long and in-depth; short, snackable content is a great way connect.

And please, please, I'm begging you, stick to a content calendar.

✨ Inspiration ✨ is great but inspiration paired with strategy will make you unstoppable.

Let's say that again for the people in the back.

Inspiration is great, but inspiration paired with strategy will make you unstoppable.

02. If they're not opening the emails, give them a good reason to

Make sure your subject line is enticing but clear (cute is fun but don't get too carried away with it). And then deliver 👏🏻 good 👏🏻 content 👏🏻 .

Whether it's an educational or actionable takeaway, entertaining tidbit, or irresistible offer - something that keeps them clicking 'open' 🧞

We can talk all day about subject line strategies but the best indicator of whether someone opens your email is how much they enjoyed the last one.

Make deposits into your business <> audience trust account. Trust = Sales.

03. If they’re unsubscribing... take a step back and re-strategize

Are you sending too many emails? Are you talking too much about your business and not enough about what your customers/audience are interested in? Are your emails even good content? Sometimes we gotta face the hard facts head on.

Take a step back. Analyze what emails you like to open. Get obsessed with your clients and what they would want to see. And maybe consider a re-launch campaign.

Bonus: Email subject lines that made me click this week

Nostalgia and strategy? I’m curious…

Speaks to my pain points as a mom of toddlers

Neville’s email titles are always the same (great for him because it’s one less decision to make) but his emails ALWAYS deliver, so I always open them

I need someone to explain it all to me, and I trust Taylor’s content

Katelyn’s emails are always top notch so I always open them. And they’re always a recurring topic and format so I know what to expect

Passed the ‘eyebrow’ test and made me raise me eyebrows and go, hmmm?

I question I get asked a lot, so I wanted to know what Nathan (who I admire) thought on the topic

Katie’s content is always top notch, so I open all her emails BUT she always nails the headline too and I want to go deeper
